Moments in Music is a series of intimate portraits of musicians who perform regularly in and around the Southend area. The aim of the project was to capture these normally outgoing musicians in a more reflective, quiet moment in a way that leaves them slightly exposed. I wanted their personalities to be the focus, no hiding behind instruments or microphones. Keen to ensure that all the images had a unified feel I set up the studio lighting to give a minimalistic feel, and asking all the models to wear black concentrated focus on their hands and faces.
I started approaching musicians in the summer of 2020, with a view to showing the collection as part of the 2021 Leigh Art Trail. Subsequent restrictions and lockdowns left me looking for an alternative way to display the images, before a chance conversation with the people here at Create98 meant that I could get the ball rolling again. They offered me an exhibition date of July 2021 and the clock started ticking. Due to Covid restrictions, I couldn’t resume photography until April so things had to move fast, with the last image being taken in June.
I have seen a simple plan to boost interest in my photography business evolve into a statement about the importance of music in these unconventional times. Over the past 16 months music has been the thing that has helped so many people keep going. At the same time the musicians themselves have sometimes been overlooked; their presence and talent have been taken for granted and without our continued support these grass roots artists may be forced to give up and the music industry will be all the poorer for their absence.
I am very grateful that all these people gave up some of their precious time in order to participate in the project, and in exchange I am inordinately proud to be able to provide them with this is platform to be recognised for the people and performers they are.
The full collection was exhibited at Create98 in Leigh-on-Sea between 1st and 23rd July 2021.
